The role of the LIRG and ULIRG phases in the evolution of Ks-selected galaxies

We investigate the role of the luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) and ultra-luminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) phases in the evolution of Ks-selected galaxies and, in particular, Extremely Red Galaxies (ERGs). With this aim, we compare the properties of a sample of 2905 Ks<21.5 (Vega mag) galaxies in the GOODS/CDFS with the sub-sample of those 696 sources which are detected at 24 microns. We find that LIRGs constitute 30% of the galaxies with stellar mass M>1x10^{11} Msun assembled at redshift z=0.5. A minimum of 65% of the galaxies with M>2.5x10^{11} Msun at z~2-3 are ULIRGs at those redshifts. 60% of the ULIRGs in our sample have the characteristic colours of ERGs. Conversely, 40% of the ERGs with stellar mass M>1.3x10^{11} Msun at 1.5<z<2.0 and a minimum of 52% of those with the same mass cut at 2.0<z<3.0 are ULIRGs. The average optical/near-IR properties of the massive ERGs at similar redshifts that are identified with ULIRGs and that are not have basically no difference, suggesting that both populations contain the same kind of objects in different phases of their lives. LIRGs and ULIRGs have an important role in galaxy evolution and mass assembly, and, although they are only able to trace a fraction of the massive (M>1x10^{11} Msun) galaxies present in the Universe at a given time, this fraction becomes very significant (>50%) at redshifts z>~2.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 9 pages, 6 figure

Chimeric peptide nucleic acid compounds modulate splicing of the bcl-x gene in vitro and in vivo

Alternative splicing of the bcl-x gene generates two transcripts: the anti-apoptotic bcl-xL isoform and the pro-apoptotic bcl-xS isoform. The ratio between the two isoforms is a key factor in development and in cancer progression. Here, we show that a short antisense chimeric peptide nucleic acid (PNA) oligonucleotide conjugated to a polypeptide containing eight Ser-Arg repeats (SR)(8) can modulate splicing of bcl-x both in vitro and in vivo and induces apoptosis in HeLa cells. The PNA-SR oligo was targeted to a region of bcl-x that does not contain splicing regulatory sequences and was able to override the complex network of splicing enhancers and silencers that regulates the ratio between the two bcl-x isoforms. Thus, PNA-SR oligos are powerful tools that can potentially modulate splice site choice in endogenous genes independent of the presence of other splicing regulatory mechanisms on the target gene

Resumo dos resultados obtidos ao longo do ano de 2001, sobre o monitoramento das queimadas no Brasil, enviado para a campanha de controle e redução das queimadas na agricultura brasileira, realizada pelo Ministério da Agricultura, Pecuária e Abastecimento (MAPA). A campanha pretende estimular o uso de alternativas tecnológicas na agricultura que substituam as queimadas, em especial nas regiões Norte e Centro-Oeste, uma das áreas mais atingidas por essa prática. A dinâmica das queimadas revelou um crescimento significativo em 2001 com relação ao ano anterior e várias surpresas, tanto na sua repartição espacial, detalhadas neste trabalho.bitstream/CNPM/831/1/cot6_qmda_bal01.pd

No need for extreme stellar masses at z~7: a test-case study for COS-87259

Recent controversy regarding the existence of massive ($\log(M_*/M_\odot) \gtrsim 11$) galaxies at $z>6$ is posing a challenge for galaxy formation theories. Hence, it is of critical importance to understand the effects of SED fitting methods on stellar mass estimates of Epoch of Re-ionisation galaxies. In this work, we perform a case study on the AGN-host galaxy candidate COS-87259 with spectroscopic redshift $z_{\rm spec}=6.853$, that is claimed to have an extremely high stellar mass of $\log(M_*/M_\odot) \sim 11.2$. We test a suite of different SED fitting algorithms and stellar population models on our independently measured photometry in 17 broad bands for this source. Between five different code set-ups, the stellar mass estimates for COS-87259 span $\log(M_*/M_\odot) = 10.24$--11.00, whilst the reduced $\chi^2$ values of the fits are all close to unity within $\Delta\chi^2_\nu=0.9$, so that the quality of the SED fits is basically indistinguishable. Only the Bayesian inference code Prospector using a non-parametric star formation history model yields a stellar mass exceeding $\log(M_*/M_\odot)=11$. As this SED fitting prescription is becoming increasingly popular for James Webb Space Telescope high-redshift science, we stress the absolute importance to test various SED fitting routines particularly on apparently very massive galaxies at such high redshifts. Ultimately, we conclude that the extremely high stellar mass estimate for COS-87259 is not necessary, deriving equally good fits with stellar masses $\sim 1$ dex lower.Comment: Submitted to ApJ

Parental Internalizing Psychopathology and PTSD in Offspring after the 2012 Earthquake in Italy.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is common in youths after earthquakes, with parental psychopathology among the most significant predictors. This study investigated the contribution and the interactional effects of parental internalizing psychopathology, the severity of exposure to the earthquake, and past traumatic events to predict PTSD in offspring, also testing the reverse pattern. Two years after the 2012 earthquake in Italy, 843 children and adolescents (9\u201315 years) living in two differently affected areas were administered a questionnaire on traumatic exposure and the UCLA PTSD Reaction Index. Anxiety, depression, and somatization were assessed in 1162 parents through the SCL-90-R. General linear model showed that, for offspring in the high-impact area, predictors of PTSD were earthquake exposure, past trauma, and parental internalizing symptoms, taken individually. An interaction between earthquake exposure and parental depression or anxiety (not somatization) was also found. In the low-impact area, youth PTSD was only predicted by earthquake exposure. The reverse pattern was significant, with parental psychopathology explained by offspring PTSD. Overall, findings support the association between parental and offspring psychopathology after natural disasters, emphasizing the importance of environmental factors in this relationship. Although further research is needed, these results should be carefully considered when developing mental health interventions
